Exploring the Air Core Power Transformer

Transformers are used to transfer energy from one circuit to a different one by suggesting that of a standard magnetic field. Altogether, except for autotransformers, there’s no direct electrical association from one course to the opposite.

When an A.C flows in a very conductor, a magnetic field occurs around the conductor, as illustrated in Figure: I. If another conductor is positioned within the field created by the 1st conductor, such as the flux lines link the 2nd conductor, as shown in Figure, then a voltage is induced into the 2nd conductor. A magnetic field is employed from 1st to generate a voltage into a 2nd coil because the principle of that transformer concept and application is predicated.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Here are some advantages and disadvantages of air core transformers:

Advantages

No magnetic core losses: Air does not possess magnetic hysteresis or eddy current losses, so air core transformers exhibit lower core losses than traditional transformers.

High-frequency operation: Air-core transformers are particularly suited for high-frequency applications because they don’t suffer from the limitations of magnetic materials at higher frequencies.

No saturation: Magnetic cores in conventional transformers can become saturated when the magnetic flux exceeds a certain level. Air core transformers do not have this limitation and can handle higher currents without saturation issues.

Reduced size and weight: The absence of a bulky magnetic core allows air core transformers to be smaller and lighter compared to their traditional counterparts.

Low leakage inductance: Air core transformers typically have lower leakage inductance due to the absence of a magnetic core, making them more efficient in power transfer.

Disadvantages

Lower efficiency: Air core transformers generally have lower efficiency than traditional transformers, primarily due to increased winding resistance and higher leakage inductance.

Limited power handling capability: Air core transformers could be better suited for high-power applications due to their lower efficiency and limited current-carrying capacity.

Increased sensitivity to external fields: Since air core transformers rely solely on air to transmit magnetic flux, they can be more susceptible to external magnetic fields, leading to potential performance issues.

Air Core electrical device

Some small transformers for low-power applications are made with air between the two coils. Such transformers are inefficient because the proportion of the flux from the first coil that links the second coil is small.

At a time once the applied voltage to the coil is E and the flux linking the waves is Ø lines, the instantaneous voltage of the obtainability is:
e = √2Ecosωt = N dØ/dt 108 —> (2)

WORKING PRINCIPLE OF TRANSFORMER

Since the quantity of flux linking the 2nd coil may be a small proportion of the flux from the 1st coil, the voltage induced into the 2nd coil is little. The number of turns may be raised to extend the voltage output. However, this may increase prices. The necessity, then, is to develop the amount of flux from the 1st coil that links the 2nd coil.

The voltage induced within the 2nd coil is set as follows.

E = N dØ/dt 108 —>(1)

Where ‘N’ is the no. of turns in the coil,

dØ /dt is the time rate of change of flux linking the ring, and

             Ø is the flux in lines.

dØ/dt = (√2cosωt 108)/N —>(3)

The maximum value is given by:

Ø= (√2E108)/ (2πfN) —> (4)

Using the MKS (metric) system, where Ø is the flux in Webbers,

magnetic-field-around-conductormagnetic-field-connductor-induced-voltage

E = N dØ /dt —> (5)

And

Ø = (2E)/ (2πf N) —> (6)

Since the quantity of flux linking the 2nd coil may be a tiny proportion of the flux from the 1st coil, the voltage induced into the 2nd coil is little. The no. of turns may be augmented to extend the voltage output. However, this can increase prices. The requirement is to develop the quantity of flux from the first coil that links the 2nd  coil.
